I just got my new 12" PowerBook last tuesday and i love it. Yesterday, when i went to empty the trash, it wouldnt let me (error -8062). Now, when i woke up the computer, it asked me for passwords i had saved in the keychain already. when i quit iChat and started it again, it asked for my password again, even though i chose to save it. This is my first mac and im not familiar enough with it to go messing around without instructions. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks,
Max

You might try and use DISK UITLITY (in your Applications folder). Let it run over your hard disk and repair the USER RIGHTS. This helps a lot...

You shouldn't have such problems very often.

G'd luck.

repaired, verified, and repaired again and it still doesnt work. any other ideas?

my overall mac experience is still excellent and this doesnt make me regret it at all, just sort of an inconvenience...

edit: the terminal method detailed in the apple knowelge base also didnt work (gave en error for the files that looked permission-related). Would it be advantageous to boot from the OSX cd and run disk utility from there, as opposed to running it from within OSX?

oh, knowelge base article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106272

Try Keychain First Aid and then try Trash It!. I had problems with Keychain going nuts on me before and the Keychain First Aid helped. Also, the Trash It! should work. Yeah, it's pretty annoying when you wanna get rid of something but it won't let you. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions, but neither of those work. Trash It! requires 24U to be installed, but the installer quits as soon as it loads. Keychain First Aid returns the following text:

Repair started
Checking keychain configuration for Maxwell Thomas (user ID=501)
Home directory is /Users/max
Checked login keychain
Checked password for ~/Library/Keychains/max
Unable to verify password for ~/Library/Keychains/max (-25291)
Login password could not be synchronized with keychain ~/Library/Keychains/max (-25291)
Unable to read settings for ~/Library/Keychains/max (-25291)
Checked default keychain
Checked keychain search list
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/max
Warning: some problems were not fixed
Repair failed

what could cause this? did something delete my keychain file?

edit: another problem. all of the System Preference panes are locked, and cannot be unlocked. when i click on the button, it immediately locks again.

please help... i found out that ALL installers (.pkg or .mpkg) close upon running, preventing me from installing several things i downloaded. im going to try booting from the OSX cd and running disk utility from there, but if that doesnt work, does anyone else have any suggestions (short of reformatting, which is a last resort)

edit: Running Disk Utility from the install CD seems to have worked. thanks for the suggestions, though!
