My date/clock/volume/display icons in my menu bar have disappeared. Not just the icons themselves, b/c I lost all ctrl-click funtionality too.
I originally thought it was a result of a botched PS7 install but now I think it may be attributable to changing themes. About a month ago I used "themechanger 0.5" to switch my Aqua to SmoothStripes. I then used "AquaFix" to change it back before I installed 10.2.4 and have left it as Aqua since.
Does anyone out there think that this theme change on my iBook could have destroyed something in my system folder?

Besides the missing menu bar icons, my whole system has become very unstable--the only programs I can use without a "**** has unexpectedly quit" notification are Safari, Mail, and iChat. Confusing..
I am ready to do a clean/reinstall, but I just wanted to know if anyone knew why this is so.

Yep. I'm running Norton Systemworks 2. I can't believe Symantec would release a POS program that would do this.

Anyone else have these problems?

What do you use for anti-virus now?

Norton Utilities puts a couple of items in /Library/Startup Items, and also adds a couple of .kext files to /System/Library/Extensions. To do a thorough job of deNortonizing your system, you will need to delete all of these. Some identify themselves as Norton such-and-such, but some are just called "Sym"-something (stands for Symantic, naturally).

Norton software is awful. Don't ever let it touch any piece of hardware.

Wow. I just ran Norton on my disk last night, and BAM!! no more starting up for me. Fortunately, I have an emergency partition for just this type of thing.
