Hi.
I downloaded Fink and mounted the disk image just fine, but then the Installer chokes when it tries to open the installer package. This also happened on the iCal install, but I forgot about it until now. I'm wanting to do some PHP development and need to download a few open source things via Fink.
Basically, what's happening is Installer.app opens for like 1 sec and then it quits unexpectedly and vanishes from the Dock with no error message reported. I checked the Console, and got this message:
Code:
dyld: /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer
malformed library: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Installation.framework/Versions/A/Installation
(no dynamic symbol table command)
Feb 24 18:36:44 jbk crashdump: Crash report written to:
/Users/jbk/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Installer.crash.log
I then checked the CrashLog that it spit out and saw this:
Code:
Date/Time: 2003-02-24 18:36:44 -0800
OS Version: 10.2.2 (Build 6F21)

Does anyone know if an upgrade would fix this (I'm running 10.2.2 now) or would this be something that requires a reinstall?
Thanks for any pointers you might have!
ps: I've restarted and fsck-ed and done the other traditional trouble-shooting things.

This just started happening to me also. I also tried installing Fink and it crashes right after I type in my user password. Now, I've just downloaded the idisk utility and it does the exact same thing.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you need to reinstall your Installation library, which is stored in the Installation.framework.
The 10.2.0 version of the framework is on the Jaguar Install CD, but the latest version will be in the 10.2.4 Update. You can download Pacifist to open the 10.2.4 update, then navigate to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Installation.framework/Versions/A, find the file named "Installation" and reinstall it.

Well, I just tried this, but when I try and open the 10.2.4 update pkg file with Pacifist, I get "an error occurred while opening the packages bom file".

Actually... I don't know if it was here or on the MacOSXHints IRC channel (i'm a dork, I admit it!), but someone suggested the correct fix that didn't require any reinstallation at all...
Fix your permissions.
Use Apple Disk Utility to verify and repair your disk permissions. This utility is found in the (you guessed it!) Utilities folder in your Application folder. It did the trick for me. Your mileage may vary.
Good luck.

That's odd, I had another user report the same thing the other day.
Could you send me an e-mail? support at charlessoft dot com.

Excuse my ignorance (this is my first mac), but how long should verifying/repairing permissions take? I select the Mac HD in the Disk Utility, click Verify Disk Permissions, it says 'verification of privileges has started', but nothing happens with the progress bar. Even after an hour the progress bar hasn't moved. Is this an overnight process? Or is there something wrong with my disk? Thanks.
If someone sent me their installer.app, would that fix my problem?
Oh, and Charles, I've tried emailing you through 2 accounts, but keep getting it returned saying the email address could not be authenticated.

You need to replace the "at" and "dot" with @ and . respectively.

Um, yeah, I'll try one more time through a hotmail account.
