it seems like everytime i click on a jpeg or pdf file, preview launches and automatically closes by itself. is there a way to reinstall preview.app?

You should be able to extract it from the OS X install discs using a program called Pacifist. If you're running Jaguar, it'll likely be on disc 1.
Even if you re-install the program, it may not fix your problem. Deleting the program's preference files might help (search for Preview.plist I think.)
Preview also relies on a bunch of other files, they might be the problem (?)
