My machine is a G3/266 desktop, beige. I've managed to install the latest Darwin binary release from CD, and I can get to a shell from the CD. The installation notes say that the installer can't bless a device on an old world machine.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to bless it manually from the installation shell? If the device is /dev/disk0s6, what should I do?

TIA,
Fraser

That doesn't make a lot of sense since OS X runs on Beige G3's just fine. Maybe you should install OS X first then try to convert to Darwin?

I would investigate the "bless" command:

"man bless" will serve you well.

man bless isn't really serving me all that well at the moment, I must say....

$ bless -device /dev/disk0s6 -format hfs -label "Mac OS X" -xcoff "/usr/standalone/ppc/bootx.xcoff"

results in...

/sbin/newfs_hfs: /dev/rdisk0s6: No such file or directory
Can't newfs_hfs /dev/disk0s6
Error while formatting /dev/disk0s6

try just:
Code:
bless -setOF -folder /System/Library/CoreServices

ooops - I didn't read your whole comment - you are still in the installation shell...

you need to find the mount point of your hard drive, try the command
Code:
df
and look for the last column in the line that starts with /dev/disk0s6, ie:
Code:
[localhost] root% df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on /dev/disk0s6 XXXXXX XXXX XXX XXXX /the/path
then the command would be:
Code:
bless -setOF -folder /the/path/System/Library/CoreServices
and reboot
