core files redundant?

I have just discovered two rather big files (both around 44 mb) in harddrive/cores/ (an invisible folder) called core.253 and core.308.
As I had a major crash around the time they were last changed (according to the files info) and at that time had to reinstall my whole system on top of the exsistent, my thought is that these could be redundant. Does anyone know if they can be deleted or if that will bring the whole system down?

TIA,
Peter

Core files are dumps of memory after a crash.

They can be safely deleted at any time (except perhaps when they're being written).

You would have had to specifically enable core dumps for them to occur, as they're disabled by default on OS X.
