I strongly suspect someone/something installed some spyware on my box. The offending process is:
/usr/sbin/slpd
Is that a legit process? It seems to be trying to open a port on my box and contact and website just a few blocks from me.
Thanks!

It is the Service Location Protocol daemon. Sort of like rendezvous, but much more complicated and not nearly as useful. It probably discovered the site your referring to because your on the same LAN segment or close to it and someone is forwarding the relevent bits. You can turn it off through /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access if you want.

I was seeing some suspicious-looking "processes" in my process viewer on my iMac before I did a clean install (for an unrelated reason). But I remember these weird process that would have things like "&!^" for their names. There were several of them that would occassionally appear--I wonder if they could be spyware.

If you are worried about spyware, install and run tcpflow. It records all incoming and outgoing traffic. You will know exactly what is being sent from and to your computer.

Unless tcpflow is spyware ... (Just kidding.) I seem to be reading a lot of forum posts about "spyware" recently. At first, I thought people were just being overly paranoid. But now, I suspect it's really jealousy. Windows users have all this really cool software for detecting and protecting their computers against spyware and hackers and such, while we poor Mac users have none. Oh, if only they would start writing spyware and viruses for the Mac too, so we could join in on the fun!
