Here's an interesting problem.
If I create a Word document (a simple test document) and save it to my Documents folder in my home directory, it will not open when I ftp the file from my home directory (in other words, I turn on FTP access, and ftp in to my OS X box from my PC). The PC displays an error that says:
"The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions. Check the file permissions for the document or drive. Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document."
The file permissions on the PC look fine, with full control enabled.
Interestingly, if I save the document as .rtf from Word, then it opens in Word on the PC after transferring via ftp. I can also save the file as PDF through the print dialog box and it works fine on the PC. Furthermore, an Excel (.xls) document does not have this problem.
Has anyone else tried this? Is it a known problem?

Are you ftping from the terminal? If so, are you turning the binary mode on in ftp?
The problem you are seeing is being caused by the ftp process. I have a Windows PC at work, and I often email a word document to myself so I can continue working at home (Mac OS X). I've transferred word documents (and powerpoint documents) by email back and forth between Win2000 and OSX and have never had a problem.
In your case, are the two machines one the same network? If so, have you considered transferring them through samba? That works for me pretty well.
I have to admit that I have never used FTP to transfer word files back and forth. This leads me to suspect that the problem is being caused by improper FTP transfer

What's the filename? Does it have special characters like quotation marks? And yes, it is very important to use binary mode in ftp.

File name has no spaces or special characters. It is simple, test.doc, note that test.pdf, test.rtf, and test.xls (file created in Excel) work just fine. FTP is being done by Transmit, which is aware of binary transfer and enables this automatically.
I'll try a different FTP program to see, or even force a binary transfer to see if that makes a difference.
It seems as if the FTP program I was using on the PC was the culprit. I tried a different one, and the file was readable on the PC. I should've thought of this sooner.
