hi, all my team and i are now on jaguar. We ofently use the message system to communicate between us (a kind of net send for windows). I know how to do that with os 9, but not with jaguar. if someone could help me, it's really important for us to exchange messages on desktop like we did when we are on os 9.

Thanx a lot and sorry for my english.

iChat over rendezvous?
1. open iChat (in /applications)
2. go to iChat preferences and check the box marked 'Enable local network messaging'
3. in the window menu (still in iChat) select 'Rendezvous'

this should get you going.

Use iChat's Rendezvous feature. Turn on iChat and you should be able to see all the people on your network using iChat and Rendezvous. You'll be able to message them without leaving your internal network.

Oops sorry, another stupid question: some people of my staff are under os9. Is it possible to use rendez-vus with them?

Thanx,

I don't think so. Rendevous was introduced with Jaguar.

Can't you get these people an AIM account and use that?
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Well why not. The thing is that on os9 we used to send messages directly on the desktop, like a net send. No one could miss it. If we use a chat system, i think we'll miss some message, even there's an alert (you know, when we are working, nothing can disturb us ).
I'm really disapointed that apple forgot such a system which is really important for our society. This is one of the only way to tell someone in live where we are on a project. It only took one second...

thanx a lot anyway for your help,

Bertrand

I think you can do a kind of net send to Windows users from Jag: smbclient -M <host> <message>. I haven't tried this...

Unfortunately OS X can't receive the messages, and I doubt it's a development priority!

I for one are really glad that Mac OSX is unable to recive Windows 'net send' messages. This is because spamers have learned that you can send messages directly to the 'net send' command over the Internet, so thay can send you spam and popup's without visiting a web page, even without having IE open.
