How do I do this in OS X:

1) Click on the end of some text and select to the beginning. In windows this would have been SHIFT-HOME.

2) Select the word in front of my cursor. In windows this would have been SHIFT-CTRL-Left Arrow

3) Select from my insertion point to the end of some text. SHIFT-END in windows.

I need a book or some basic tips on using keyboard shortcuts.

I don't think there is any equivalent for all these actions on the Mac. These are typical windows shortcuts... I might be wrong....

I don't know the answer for 1 and 3 (usually shift-up or shift-down arrow is what I do in Windows anyway)

For word selection replace CTRL with the option key.

shift - function - left arrow
(or if you have an Home button: Shift-Home)

Shift-Option- Right Arrow

Yep: Shift-End (if you don't have 'end' it can be emulated by pressing Function-RightArrow)
