Given that the PPC 970 is a 64-bit processor and that Apple is likely to recompile Mac OS X to take advantage of the 64-bit IBM PowerPC 970, I wonder if Apple will still be able to provide the Classic Compatibilty environment?

The PowerPC 970 provides backwards compatibliity with 32bit applications. Since Classic in OS X is more of an application it should be able to run on PowerPC 970 systems.

It would require some modifications to Classic. However, these modifications are fairly small, and Classic remains valuable. I'd say it's a safe bet that Apple will make it continue to work, at least for the first generation of 970-based machines, and probably several generations afterwards.

To be honest, i don't use Classic (well, once in awhile to run Alpha Centuri or Adobe ImageStyler :-)
But i was wondering if Apple will use it as an *excuse* to not ship the Classic environment with the 64-bit 970 Macs.
Perhaps they would be able to make it work on the 64-bit OS, but on the otherhand it is not a Virtual machine emulator like SoftPC or VirtualPC so in fact there may be unforeseen complications.

If apple did a little bit of work they could probably get the entire OS 9.2 to run on a PPC 970, at least with 32 bit compatability. Heck they could probably even do it under native 64 bit.
And who will be using classic by then? Uhh... hello, they could VERY WELL ship by like augst or something, who knows of Quark will have version 6 out by then, and a fair number of people use classic for that.
And quite frankly not everyone has the cash to upgrade their apps when they buy a new computer, and not eveyone pirates either. After I get my 12 inch powerbook I'll probably be running several macromedia apps under classic.
