Do you prefer the Trash on the Dock or Desktop?

Where do you prefer using the Trash? On the Dock or on the Desktop (like in Mac OS 9)?
Would you like to see a (Finder/Dock) preference to display the Trash on the Desktop instead of the Dock?
(Like the preference to show local drives and removable media on the desktop)

If I was to remove either one, I'd remove the Dock. Sorry, but the Desktop is more valuable to me. Both are very good, but the Desktop wins hands down.

The option would always be perferable since it caters for everyone.
I HATE it in the dock. I have my dock hidden, when i drag a file to the dock i have to move down until the file is over the tashcan but the freaking thing always moves, due to the dock thinking you going to be putting the file in the dock not the trash.

On my wide-screen TiBook, I always have the dock showing and therefore, I like having the Trash in the dock. It's basically, "on the desktop" anyway since the dock is showing.

In OS X, having the trash on the desktop seems pretty dumb to me. The trash isn't only a place to send deleted files, some applications use it to remove things from playlists and stuff like that. If it is placed on the desktop it can be hidden under a window... At least where it is now you know a window will never be covering it up...

Well, as an option to have it either on the Desktop or the Dock should allow people to have it where they want it.

I right click and "move to trash" everything anyway, so it doesn't matter to me.

I prefer my 'rubbish bin' on the dock because it is always there and its so unobtrusive. I like it there on the dock, also because I rarely see my desktop because of all the windows and apps in the way. If you want it on the desktop, just use iCan.

I usually select items in the finder and command+delete. Much faster than dragging. I keep the trash in the dock, and the dock hidden, since I don't use the trash icon much.

I would use this mehtod too except that there is a noticeable pause when using this contextual menu. It seems that the Open and Open With... commands require access to the hard drive. Even when the hard drive is already spinning, I think it stops to create a list of applications capable of opening the file. One way to avoid this lag is to right-click and then move the mouse out of the menu, past the open items, and back into the menu on top of the Move To Trash item.
I'm curious, what machine do you have and do you also experience this hiccup in OS X responsiveness?

I don't use the "move to trash" option much but often do use cmd-backspace to trash items from the finder, etc..
I do hide the dock.
As a result as someone pointed out, dragging items to the trashcan can be a bit of pain, as it's a moving target.
The keyboard equivalent is faster and more handy.
I'm very much a purist and have been using the Dock for over a decade (as a long time NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP user), so i still only keep applications on my dock. With common folders and files on the finder toolbar/shelf...or desktop if using the simple Finder.
However, if my Trash were on the desktop, my Dock instantly becomes a true application manager/switcher: being a place for commonly used apps and managing running apps and their minimized windows.

I think there should be an option, for those who want it on the desktop. I, however, prefer mine in the Dock now, since it's always visible and can't be hidden by a window

Honestly I'd just like to remove the trash from my dock.

Get iCan if you don't like to use the trash in the Dock.
I don't use it nor made it. I'm just familar with it because I was hired to design the icons

I always use the key combination command + backspace and would like to get rid of the trash can altogether.

Standard GUI feature in OS X - holding the command-key when dragging items to e.g. the Dock will "lock" the current contents so that they don't dodge out of the way in anticipation of you wanting to place the item in between. Been that way since day one.

Well not quite. The addition of optional features is not always a good idea and does not satisfy everyone.
I'm not trying to comment on this topic in particular...
Only that the addition of a feature cannot be justified simply by making it optional.

I like it in the dock. I auto-hide mine as well but I remeber exactly where in the dock the trash can is so I just drag, delete, and I'm on my way.
Its easy to tell when its full as well, the shrooms let me know...

I like mine in the Dock. It is quicker to locate the trash on the Dock than on the desktop.

I'd like the Desktop, but only because that's more familiar. Switchers may appreciate that location too. My vote's for an option.
