Im not quite sure how to describe my problem. Basically, I've searched the forum and I found someone else with the same problem here . However, I've tried everything, from editing a new .xinitrc and including source /sw/bin/init.sh , i tired setting a new PATH in it, i tried adding . /sw/bin/init.sh in my .profile (as indicated in init.sh), and ive tried every single combination of the above. I also made the environment.plist as suggested in the other thread. What I dont understand, is that if I open a normal Terminal.app (with or without Apple X11 running), and type, say, gkrellm it runs! Therefore the PATH is set correctly. Also when I run X11, and type gkrellm frm an xterm, it runs aswell. So where is my problem ? Well, my problem is that the only way to run these programs from the X11 "Application" menu, is by putting /sw/bin/gkrellm or /sw/bin/gimp .. Just "gkrellm" or "gimp" wont work. Another problem (which is linked i beleive), when I run Fink Commander, and try to install something from there it gives my the followig error (3d pong is an example);

Reading Package Lists...
Building Dependency Tree...
The following NEW packages will be installed:
3dpong
0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 33.3kB of archives. After unpacking 0B will be used.
Get:1 http://us.dl.sourceforge.net 10.2/release/main 3dpong 0.4-2 [33.3kB]
Fetched 33.3kB in 0s (40.8kB/s)
dpkg: `update-rc.d' not found on PATH.
dpkg: 1 expected program(s) not found on PATH.
NB: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin.
E: Sub-process /sw/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

The only way for me to install packages is manually via Terminal usind sudo apt-get install "packagename" .

Any insight/help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hmmm...

Do you have Fink Commander set to use unstable packages?

No, although ive tried setting it to use unstable packages aswell (for other reasons), to the same effect.

Edit: I dont understand :/ under Terminal or xterm if i type echo $PATH :

[daSilVetZ:~] dasilvetz% echo $PATH
/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/Users/dasilvetz:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin

which just confirms what i said earlier. If the path is correctly set, then why wont apps run from the menu, and why do i get errors under fink commander then?!

New Edit: As a picture is worth a thousand words (or so they say) here is a screenshot of my fink commander. Notice the error, but also notice the path in FC's prefs is set correctly

ok i fixed my fink commander problem by adding /sw/sbin manually to the prefs. but i still have the x11 issue. ie the path seems to be set, (when i run gkrellm from the terminal app or xterm in x11 it works) but if i just put the command (without /sw/bin/ infront) in the app menu it wont run.
