Hi All,

I am a recent switcher from the Windows world and have a problem with my one week old ibook 800mhz combo. It's a pretty standard setup 10.2.4 (6132).

When I select shutdown or restart from the apple menu the screen goes blue for a few seconds before returning to the desktop. The same also happens when I press the power button, although I can still force a shutdown by holding the button for 5 seconds (not a very clean method of shutting down).

I can issue a shutdown from the console and this works fine. I've tried running fsck and get the following output, which doesn't look to healthy:-

** Checking catalog file.
Overlapped extent allocation (file 194441d)
Overlapped extent allocation (file 194442d)
Overlapped extent allocation (file 194441d)

Also tried resetting the pmu.

Any suggestions of solutions, or which files may have been corrupted are greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards.

S-Express.

The same thing happened on mine and miraculously went away. The only thing I can think of was that I had my hand on the back of the monitor and started to close it while it shut down. I'm thinking that maybe the computer got confused and started to go to sleep... not sure if that helps. I make sure my iBook is completely opened and don't touch it until it is shut down and haven't had any problems since. (The only other thing I can think that I've done since the problem resolved itself is launch OS 9(?))

Also, do you have any firewire or usb appliances plugged in during shut down? Unmount all disks and diconnect any device and see if this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. No external devices were connected during shutdown. After playing around for a while I still could not get the system to shutdown from finder, so in the end I re-installed OSX and "dragged" over my apps from the previous installation folder. This was surprisingly painless (if a little slow).

Apart from this glitch I am extremely happy with my ibook (800/384Mb). It’s been fun re-learning after my years on Microsoft operating systems. Wireless range to my Extreme base station is exceptional and performance/usability has been great.

Today I’ve been installing VPC 6 so I can still get my fix of XP Runs surprisingly well considering the emulation going on. At the moment I’m installing Redhat 7.3 under VPC so it’ll be interesting to see how well that runs.

Many thanks
