Come through for me, mighty readers of the MacNN Forum, please.

Situation: I've given my iBook to a friend so that he can use Illustrator to do last minute work on a project. I need to tell him how to connect it to his broadband connection so that trasferring of files can happen.

What does he need to know?

He knows nothing about Macs, I know nothing about broadband. The iBook is running Mac OS X 10.2.3. I assume the stuff he needs to enter goes in the Network pane of System Preferences, but beyond that I haven't a clue.

Please, help!

Chances are that he already has a small home LAN set up with a router to share the internet service. In this case, the iBook will probably be configured fine right now. Just stick an ethernet cable from the router into it and go. If no go, make sure the Network pane is set for DHCP under Ethernet and hit apply. Sometimes when it is already set but doesn't work, it helps to change it from DHCP to anything else, apply, and change it back to DHCP and apply again. See?
If there is no router there, then it would depend on what kind of service he has; cable or DSL. Cable is a little easier. Both need Network pane set for DHCP. Either way, first try just plugging in the ethernet cable again and see what happens. If cable and no go, turn off the cable modem and the iBook. Leave off for 2 minutes. Turn on modem and let it initialize. Watch the lights. When they're steady and normal (like they usually are) turn on the iBook. Try a web site. He may also need to add the DNS info in Network pane. If he has DSL, he'll have to enter his user info and such. It should be fairly obvious where.
This is all more difficult to type out than to actually do. It's really no problem.

Thank you. However, though I wrote the first post in this thread in the first person, it was actually my girlfriend who was trying to make this work, and she has collapsed from exhaustion now, so work has ended for tonight and so the broadband connection is no longer required on her iBook. But thank you for the advice, I shall keep it for when I eventually get broadband myself.
