So I can buy iDVD by purchasing iLife.
But it only works for Apple Superdrives

How do they do this? Is this software related, or is there a kind of hardware stuff on the Superdrive so iDVD does/does not see this, and so will/will not work?

Is there a way to by-pass this idiot principe?

I recently bought a "La Cie DVD Rewritable Drive".

Would love to use iDVD.

This has been re-hashed before, but again: Apple is still primarily a hardware company. The software is made to sell hardware. Hence, iDVD is just for the superdrive, to drive the sales of computers with it installed. Makes sense. Annoying? yes. There was a hack made that would let iDVD work on external drives (can't remember who made it) however, Apple threatened to sue for copyright violation (or something) and the hack went away.

The hack you're referring to was produced by OWC, and it was only for their external drive (so it still wouldn't allow iDVD to work with the topic starter's LaCie drive).

Your best bet is to pony up the dough for DVD Studio Pro (the included software with these drives usually sucks beyond imagination).

If your a student (or know a student? yeah, yeah, I know...) you can get DVD Studio Pro for $300. Otherwise you'll pay $1000. (Same deal for Final Cut Pro) That's quite a discount. Still expensive.

Wouldn't it be nice for apple to release a nice DVD burner to go with my tower? slap a nice little premium, and I'd still buy, just so I could use iDVD. Its hard to justify an upgrade when my computer runs just great under OSX.

All I want to do is use iDVD. Its so neato!

I bought the first TiBook, of course without dvd-burner. There wasn't an option to get it.

The crap about Apple being a hardware company should justify this! I mean, iDVD doesn't run on a wintel machine anyway. And besides, I would like to pay for it, but not the 1000 US$ for DVD Studio Pro.

And they still wonder why some people hack these programs? Be serious!

try this, put the burner IN yor tower, if u have a tower and it might work, buddy of mine did this, bought a FW burner, no go, put it in his machine, and pulled the cdrw out and it thought it was a SD and works in iDVD and DVDSP, ten he pout the cdrw in the FW case that th DVDRW was in. its worth a shot an completly reversable, so give it a try.

OK, I will get my iron saw, cut the TiBook in two, push the drive in and come back with the results. Can't wait, I'm curious

Actually - this will work. Just go out and purchase a pioneer DVD-RW and you are set. They are the same model Apple is putting in their machines.

Of course, if you have a laptop you are SOL, however, we tower users do have an option.

I'll have to give that a try. gotta find somewhere w/ a decent return policy. or not, since I'll need a DVD burner anyway. Thanks for giving a poor college student hope.

It'd be nice to get out of paying the $300 student price for DVD studio pro, even if it is $700 discounted.
