starting my second week in osx, mostly loving it.
but it is (unsurprising) sluggish on my
g3/400 powerbook (768meg ram).

will i gain anything if i run at thousands instead of million colors?

and...any tips for speed gains? (until i get a new powerbook of course)

thanx!

Turn dock animations off, maybe even turn anti aliasing off (though text will look a lot crappier), def turn genie effect off (if you haven't already).

Nothing, however, will make you see similar speeds to what you did in OS9, and that is true no matter what machine you switched over on.

Just learn how to take advantage of the multitasking and at least that aspect of speed and productivity will be noticable. Just don't expect OSX to be nearly as Snappy?

This is not actually true - there are machines now on which there is no perceptible speed difference between OSes 9 and X because they both respond pretty much instantaneously. In my experience, anything dual above 1 GHz fits that bill...

Yes thousands instead of millions is good especially for scrolling, Apple's recommended this in fact in some kb's, don't have the link though. Logging out helps clear the pipes too. Make sure you run your cron jobs.

If you get rid of the debug code you'll find that X is teh snappie!1
i look in your general direction
