X11 is cool...but I need to figure out somethings.

Using X11, I remotely logged into another machine that's got some 2-d drafing application as well as a matching 3-d solid modeling application. I set the display to show up on my ibook, it shows up fine.

Here's where problems start to crop up.

1) The 2-d drafting application shows up, but the keyboard mapping
isn't enabled exactly. Everything works it appears except the mapping of the F1-F12 function keys. when I try to use F2 to do what normally would be "zoom", it adjusts the ibook brightness instead, so that's not right.

Also...the middle mouse button functionality is lost.
Is there anyway to fix this? Under X11--> preferences, all the right boxes are checked off such as "emulate 3 button mouse, follow system keyboard layout, enable key equivalents under x11"

2) I tried starting up the 3-d modeler, it didn't fly. I get a "segmentation violation". Checking the error log, I get this explanantion:

Xlib: extension "XInputExtension" missing on display "ibook:0.0"

Where can I find this missing extension for the display, and how do I install it? (sorry I'm only marginally unix saavy).
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

Could I presuade you to move over to Pro/Engineer?

It works great on a remote display, and pan zoom rotate is crtl-alt-comand.

Sorry this post is no help at all. I just hate I-DEAS ans wish everyone would use Pro/E.

^ hahaha...why so much hate for I-DEAS?
Where do you work?

The thing I don't like about I-DEAS is the painful process of partitioning the hell out of multi-part assembly when you want to run a FEA on it. That's absolutely tedious. I haven't actually gotten one to work yet, with my limited experience.

Ummm...it seems that Nastran and I-DEAS are the main programs being utilized where I am. I think they use Pro-E too but that's for a related group out in Denver.
I have not used Pro-E personally.
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

I work at an engineering company in NJ called Tri-Power Design part time. Im a grad student a NJIT.

Both at school and at work I use Pro/E. Realy amazing software. I just cant get used to IDEAS. The interface is cumbersom and it uses some outdated part representation technology as compared to Pro/E.

For some reason Pro Engineer is very popular on the east coast. Not to many schools or companies use IDEAS around here.
