i've been trying to install linux on my pm8500 w/ 500mhz g3 upgrade (currently running os9.2)
but unfortunatly i havent gotten it to boot up on the cd
i've tried a downloaded yellowdog linux cd and a purchased mandrake ppc cd
neither will boot
i've held down 'c' and changed keyboards, played with startup disk and system disk with no luck

i was wondering what i might try next to get it to boot and install cuz i'm outta ideas

is it possible that the upgrade card may be the problem?

I recently got YDL 2.3 to run on my ppc 7500 with a Sonnet G3 233mhz upgrade card. It took a few trys, but it eventually worked. I don't believe your machine can boot (neither could mine) using yaboot on the cd. Instead you must use the provided Bootx. It is located in the install folder on the cd. Unstuff it, and install it. Then go through the install process as described for Bootx. One other thing, in the install instructions, they say to make the bootloader partition 10mb. This didn't work for me, rather I made it 100mb and that is what got the install to work.

Read, and re-read this install guide. Print it out and have it with you during the install, it helps alot. The install should go pretty smooth, it's easy.

Also check the hardware compatability page for info about your machine.

I don't think Mandrake will run, at least it says nothing in their hardware compatability list about it.

Here's a thread I started about my install...

yea! i got yellowdog to install- thanks for the help

but now that i've got it running i'm having a hard time getting x11&kde to run on my monitor
in the install process i picked my sony monitor and the standard resolution i use it at in OS9.
but now when the graphical login screen starts up the monitor cuts out and displays a message for 'out of scan range'

how can i change the settings in x11 so my monitor will work if i cant get the dispaly to run?
can i login via ssh using my ibook & if so then how do i change the configuration of x11?
how can i fix this without having to go throught the install again?

also - right now i am using the built in graphics from my powermac8500 but i also have a voodoo3 card that i would like to use. - will the voodoo card work with linux?

Read the install guide, it tells you how to find a monitor setting that works for you, using dexter.py.

Ans check YDL's site for the hardware compatibility charts, it will tell you about the Voodoo card....
