i just installed a truckload of fonts into my computer, transfer was fine and the fonts showed up in photoshop. thing is that i put in 1000s of fonts, and the PS7 font directory only lists up to the letter B. im missing out on 90% of my fonts!!! although, freehand10 recognizes all of the fonts.

please help me figure out how to utilize all of my fonts on PS7. btw, off subject, but with non audio cd transfers onto your desktop, is it slow as hell like mines on my power g4?

I have the same problem, though I have less fonts so mine stops in the Ms.

I hoped OS X would "fix" this.

While there may be no practical limit to the number of fonts OS X can have open at once, I can't help but think that having several thousand open at once is going to put a serious strain on your memory.

If you really need access to that many fonts, then you really need a font management utility, like Suitcase or Font Agent Pro. They'll preview/activate/deactivate fonts so that you don't have to move them in and out of the fonts folder, and generally, life will be better. You can pick a few of your favorites and create a startup set, too, so that maybe 100 or 200 of your most apt-to-be-used fonts are opened for you when you log in.

There must be a low limit in Photoshop, as there was a thread the other day where someone couldn't see anything past K after loading a ton of fonts into his ~/Library/fonts folder. Photoshop is RAM hungry too, and I can't help but think that Photoshop + 2000 active fonts would load your RAM up and start paging out to VM pretty quick.

Really, even with 2 gig of RAM you probably don't want more that 200 or 300 fonts open at any given time.

hmm, but I dont think photoshop stores all fonts, even ones not used, in ram. That would be stupid.

my only question is why the hell would you WANT that many?

i cant think of more than 100 (if that many) decent typefaces.

No, Photoshop doesn't but I believe the system does.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I know this was the case in OS 9.

Really, though. If you NEED thouands of fonts at your immediate disposal, then you'd be well advised to purchase a font-management program. If you dont NEED thousands of fonts at your disposal, try to get by with a couple hundred active.

EDIT: P.S. why don't you go ank this queston over at the Adobe user to user forums? I'm sure someone there knows if there's a limit to the number of fonts Photoshop will access.
