with the current deal on verizon DSL i took the plunge but on reading the system requirements they mention that they only support up to OS 9.1 (which just seems silly). i read on other post that folks here have used early versions of OSX with verizon but would like to know if i should be aware of special issues native to 10.2.4.

also, anyone out there who signed up for the 29.95 deal get billed yet - i'd like to prepare myself for the real bill (that will include a boat load of taxes, surcharges i imagine).

thanks

I used 10.1 and the early 10.2 fine with Verizon DSL. I can't image 10.2.4 will present any unusual difficulties.

Off-topic, but I got the h-ll out of Verizon DSL. Service was slow, contract locked me in ($$$ penalty for canceling), and installing those little filters everywhere was annoying. Went to Earthlink cable over TimeWarner and haven't looked back: full 2megabit downloads, can drop the contract anytime, and a flat $41, no hidden anything.

"Does not support" does not equal "does not work with"

They just haven't spent the money to get people trained in OS X support.

PPPoE in 10.2.4 works just fine with Verizon DSL.

PPoE? I have Verizon and I just use normal DHCP for the connection in 10.2 and it works great.

thanks for the feedback. i wont get the modem for another week. i've heard horror stories about verizon as well, but at $29.95/month for the first 6months (with one month "free") i thought i'd try it, especially since there is no contract - and we're moving in 6 months, so i'll have other options once we get into the new place.

i'll probably try cable next time, but for now slow DSL beats dragass dail-up and dropped connections.

well i got the modem and set it up in OS 9.2.2 (i called verizon earlier in the week to see about the set up date and i got a fellow mac head who told me that DSL rocks in OSX but that he wasn't allowed to tell me how to set it up. what he did say was that i should set up in OS 9, then take the numbers and plug them into DHCP.)

well it works great in OS9 but i can't figure out what i'm doing wrong in X that it doesn't come up.

i used DHCP with manual set up since DHCP alone doesn't allow me to enter the Router numbers that i have in OS9. but then i can't figure out how to "connect." then i tried PPPoe, which connects according to the logon screen but when i try to open the browser i get nothing, and all the numbers in the tcp/ip panel are different.

i'm blabbering now, so, is there a link to a place i can find a step by step idiot-proof way of setting this up. the speed is sick, but i need to run it in OSX since all my apps are there.

you pay out the teeth though with cable if you want multiple computers on your home network.

You pay an additional $10 a month if you want additional IP addresses. But you really don't need them if you have a router. So what is the problem?

got it to work. left everything blank in DHCP and it works. is there an optimum setting for the fastest speeds? i read somewhere the using PPPoe slows the connection - any truth to this?

Verizon DSL is working great for me. It seems strange that Verizon doesn't claim OS X support. The Verizon DSL CD had an OS X installation program. I don't recall exactly what it installed but all I had to do was double click on one of the html files it installed and then fill in a few blanks. Somehow, it managed to fill in my username and password for me. That's right, I didn't have to configure the system preferences in any way whatsoever.

If the automated install and configuration works on you system, its absolutely mind-boggling in its simplicity. (IF it works)
