I have heard of tons of people using Firewire CD Burners that will no longer work since 10.2, I have a QPS 4X4X24 Firewire burner and it acts erratically in 10.2 and never completes a burn, so guess what I did!?

I dismantled it and took the firewire bridge off to make it an IDE internal Burner!!

Took the DVD-ROm drive out of my G4 and put the burer in, and viola! It works perfectly again. The only glitch is that the button to open the drive door doesn't open the new burner but I can use iTunes eject button to pop it open.

Anyways, thought I would share that as I was sick of waiting for this HUGE glitch to be worked out, before I could use my burner again.

I heard the problem is that 10.2 is having issues with older firewire ports or something and Apple having dialog with manufactures to sort it out. (not sure if that's the deal but that is one rumor I heard).

Well, it sure is nice to be able to use my burner again, glitch-free!!

you could also enable the eject.menu (system/library/CoreServices/Menu extras/) and eject from the menu bar.

just a thought...

cool hack though!

Of course, that totally defeats the purpose of a Firewire burner. It might make more sense to just go and buy a $30 24X burner for your tower, if you need a Firewire burner for other purposes.

By the way, I wonder what it is with these name brand burners. EVERY burner I've tried in EVERY noname Firewire case I've tried has worked fine with OS X.2 (with my GigaBook). Some are not recognized for burning from the Finder or from iTunes, but ALL the drives are always recognized and work with Toast. I think I've tried about 5 CD or DVD burners now, in three different Firewire cases.

yeah but it's 4X4X24 so firewire doesn't really add any benefit.

It's funny though, i can burn CD's in iTunes no prob now, but when I go to burn a Emergency Boot Disk using BootCD & DiskCopy I get a Kernal Panic.

Anyone know if kernal panics have been reported when buring a BootCD image?

No burner can max out firewire. The problem is now your drive is no longer portable or transferable.

My Que 12x works great since 10.0

I solved the problem by deleting the kernel extension cache files and zapping my PRAM, but I guess whatever floats your boat...

(BTW, I have the same drive as the original poster: 4x4x24 QPS FireWire)

The kernel extension cache files are here:

/System/Library/Extensions.mkext
/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache

To zap the PRAM, hold down Command-Option-P-R at startup.

Side note: My Formac, bus-powered firewire burner built around a Teac mechanism has worked in every Mac OS since I bought it... gotta love it when these things aren't giving us grief!
