Got $150 to spend on a printer, want it to work with X with no problems, and it's more important for me to have nice looking black text than pretty color pictures.

What has been your experience?

The Epson Stylus C82 is a great printer - fast (22 PPM), looks great, works fine in Mac OS X, etc.

The only downside is that the paper feed is somewhat loud, but the printing is quiet.

Most won't recommend a Lexmark, but the highest end model (Z65) is quite nice as well.. quiet, good prints, dual paper trays and complete OS X drivers.

I use an HP 5550, a Canon i550, an Epson 820, and recently just picked up a Canon i950. These all fall in around the $150 price range except for the i950. While the i950 and the Epson 820 make the nicest 8x10 photo prints, I use the HP 5550 for just about all my text printing because it excels at it. The 820 is cheapest and rivals the i950 in color prints but is noisy, somewhat slow, and sub-par with black text. The i550 is a happy medium: OK photo prints, OK text. The HP 5550 has OK photo prints and excels in text. The i950 excels in both, very fast, but costs more.

I suggest the HP 5550 for your purposes. I saw it at Sams Club for less than $120. A bargain for a well-rounded inkjet with decent speed.
