I installed 10.2 (clean install) on a newly erased hard drive. Software Update launched and I ran all of the software updates (10.2.4 combo, security update, iPhoto, etc.).

Next I reboot he computer and went to install a Canon print driver. The installer is Java. When the installer is launched it immediately quits with no error message. I checked the console and saw this message:

Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

How can I have an error like this on a freshly installed system!!

I ran Disk Utility to Fix Permissions. Get the same error.

To check it wasn't just the Canon installer, which I have run before with no problem, I launched one of Apple's java related programs (I think it was the Applet launcher) and noticed the same error in the console.

10.2.4 sure is flakey. When it isn't causing panics (I've had several so far and my system was stable on 10.2.3) it has other problems such as this.

Incidentally that exact same error has appeared in the Java forum at Sun's site. Windows users have reported the exact same error message (the suggested solution was to include the path in the classpath. I'd like to know how this could get messed up on a fresh install).

Is there an easy way to fix this "Error occurred during initialization of VM." I do not want to reinstall the OS again! Is it safe to just reinstall the Java stuff by extracting it from the 10.2 CD (using Pacifist), or download the Java 1.3.1 update and run it?
