OK, I've got a file in .icns format. I want to use the file as an icon, but if I copy and paste it, it has a black background. If I open it in Iconographer the same is true. If I try and drag it onto a get info window, nothing happens. How do I use this thing without getting a black background???

Get Icns2Rsrc from Versiontracker. It will create an icon resource from the icns file that you can copy and paste using the Finder's info dialog.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

In Iconographer, instead of just copying the icon, choose either "Copy Icon Family" or "Copy Icon and Mask" (can't remember which is the right one at the moment - it's one of these two) from the menu. When you do this, it copies in a form that should show up correctly when pasted on something in the Finder.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
