How can I convert a basic user to admin privileges?

Can this be done using NetInfo - and if so how?

Why not just do it using the System Preferences?


1) System Preferences
2) Accounts
3) Click desired User
4) Click "Edit User"
5) Check "Allow user to administer this computer"

Tried that - it is greyed-out.

1) You have to be an admin user to edit other users
2) You may need to click the "Lock" down at the bottom of the screen to enable the ability to make changes

I had authenticated as an admin.

Set the user's group to admin and make sure they'r ein the staff group.

I logged in, and from there I can change other users.

along the same lines..

is there a way to do this if there is no admin on the computer?

I know someone's computer that has a user account on it, but no admin account. I'm not sure how this happened, but it did.

anyway to convert her back to admin?

Maybe try logging in as root, not sure, but I think you need to be logged in as an admin in order to create an admin account or change an account to admin. Wait if the computer does not have at least one admin account I don't see how you could enable a root account. Damn this sounds like a catch 22 situation.

Boot up in singleuser mode...this will give you privs to create a new admin account. Also, you can boot from the install cd, and reset root pw...even if it's not enabled. I seem to remember this working for me in the past.
