How do I disable caps lock?

Computer is iBook 800mz 12", and using an external Macally IceKey keyboard. Running 10.2.4

I've tried installing a program called uControl (v. 1.0.6) --but it does not seem to function from system preferences panel.

what do you mean? Turn caps lock off? just hit the key again...

If you mean make the key completely non-functional, I'm not sure why you'd want/need to do this...

Because if you're typing a long document and your typing style makes you often hit the caps lock key instead of shift, it's very annoying.

As for a solutions, try Caps Off if you're running OS 9.

For OS X try uControl.

As previously stated, I am running OS X and have tried uControl.

I hate to say it, but this was a REAL easy thing to do with Windoze---but no, I don't want to go back there!

I am pretty sure it can be done somehow with key-mapping (or whatever it is called).

Here is a good place to start your search...
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...ry=key+mapping

It might take some coding around, but does not sound impossible.

I guess it would be, but damn - take some time and learn to be a bit more precise... it's not like accurate typing is not a good skill to have.

Or I could just disable the stupid key and continue my 80 WPM typing. But damn...learn to respect the fact that some people want to do something different than you.

The link to "key mapping" looked interesting but just a tad risky if you don't know what you're doing (like me).

Let's take another look at the uControl program. I intalled it and have the uControl panel showing up in my System Preferences---trouble is: it doesn't do anything when you check off "capslock to control." I just leave it checked and close system preferences.

Has anyone used this program under 10.2.4?

I certainly respect desires to do things differently - you're welcome to disable the key, I'm just expressing my opinion that this really shouldn't be that large of an issue:

Most keyboards, most places, have the caps-lock key enabled. I would seem to me that rather than worrying about disabling it every time I sat down at a different computer, it would be well worth the effort of learning to type just a little more precisely. Though for a short time it might hurt the 80 wpm you seem so proud of, certainly a typist of your ability would soon learn the marginal improvement in accuracy necessary to avoid caps-lock problems...

I always use caps lock for more than 1 capitalized letter (like RAM). I find it much quicker, because it still allows me to use both hands to type the word. I only use shift for 1 capitalized letter.

I have ALREADY decided that I wish to compute without the benefit of the caps lock key. I have done so very happily for many years on different computers. I would like to find a way to do just that on this iBook.

I appreciate any help from those of you that can suggest any way to disable the caps lock key.

Anyone else insisting that I leave my caps lock key in its present state is simply off topic in this particular thread (which I started)---go sing in praise of your caps lock key elsewhere! Or at least try to imagine the possiblity that some people have the left pinky of a clumbsy gorilla and cannot coexist with that caps lock key sitting just above the shift key.

Well guys… I guess I have just not been candid enough with you concerning my desire to rid my iBook of its caps lock key. It’s time for me to tell you the REAL reason that I cannot coexist with that key:

--------

It started about a month ago… I began noticing that nearly 3/4 of the spam being filtered into my special spam folder consisted of email with the subject: “Add inches to your male member…” Not all of them were worded exactly like that, but were of the same general type. After thinking about all those claims for “additional length” I began to think that perhaps I could benefit from such products. So… I chose a dozen of the best sounding emails and sent away for all twelve products. Later in the week I started receiving small parcels in the mail---all in plain brown wrappers. After studying the varying contents of each package, I soon realized that some of the products were creams, some were pills, and a few were injections. Last week I decided, that in order to obtain the largest amount of “additional length” I would take all of the products together at one time!

I finally gathered up the courage to take all of them together last night.

When I awoke this morning, I got out my ruler and was very disappointed to discover that nothing had changed as I had expected it to. But for some strange reason, my left pinky had suddenly grown to nearly 18 inches in length and 4 inches in girth!

That is why I must get rid of my caps lock key…

Or you could use the pliers to yank off that enlarged pinkie finger.

This thread just got much better! I want to disable capslock because I can type perfectly well on an ordinary keyboard but I now live on a Ti book and it's that bit smaller (the old Powerbook was worse but the Ti book is not perfect). It's a valid request!

Hey, the OSX version of uControl has been pulled;

"Notice: This version has been pulled due to an alleged patent violation regarding the Twerq feature. Another version should be available in a, hopefully, short amount of time"
