Dang system preferences crashes EVERYTIME i got to change my desktop image. I dunno why, but it does... I rebooted like 50 times still it " unexpectly quits " everytime... Virus maybe? I have no idea but its hella annoying, any ideas?

Lastly another problem im having is sometimes when im using my computer, it brings up a " you must reboot screen". I dunno why this is, could it be a virus or possibly becuase of of autoupdating software, forces me to quit when it finishes installing?

thanks in advance....

Please post a Console log of when System Prefs crashes.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

That's not a virus; it's called a "kernel panic." It's the Mac equivalent to Windows's blue screen of death. It means that something is very very wrong.

Try repairing permissions with Disk Utility. Try making a new user and updating from the new user's account, to see if it's a preference problem. If that fails, try an archive reinstall of OS X. If that fails, too, you might have bad RAM or buggy peripherals. What peripherals do you have?

Hold down command and s at boot and type "fsck". That should fix any undelrying problems. Once that has run type "sudo shutdown now" and enter your pass to get out of single user mode

might think about renaming ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist to something like com.apple.systempreferences.plist.bak, and see what that does. Should give you all new preferences. If that doesn't help, you can always delete the new .plist, and go back to the old one.

thanks guys. I have one questions though, since normally I get kernel panic on startup, takes 2 or 3 times to get the comp to bootup, will reinstalling mac OS X fix this problem? and if this will, can i reinstall WITHOUT erasing my data ( formatting) ? thanks a lot

Wow, it sounds like you have a serious problem. Since we don't know what the problem is, no one can say whether reinstalling will help or not. And yes, you can reinstall without deleting everything--it's called an "archive install," like I mentioned in my first post.

It normally KP's? You have bad RAM.

That, or a bad install/HD corruption.

Most likely a bad RAM stick.
