Hi all,

while travelling I am using a modem to connect instead of my usual dsl. I have been finding that the modem has a habit of disconnecting itself and, when it does, it sits there saying 'disconnecting', but nothing else happens. It goes on for ages and the only way I can get the modem to work again is to reboot the system (Tibook, 1Ghz).

Is there a way that I can re-initialise the modem without having to reboot. I tried killing the modem process, but that didn't seem to help.

I think the modem hanging might have something to do with caller id etc, but some of the places I stay I can't turn that off.

Any advice much appreciated.

J.

Hi there, I had a whole bunch of modem problems that culminated in what you described. Those other issues were dropped connections, inability to connect, sleep delay, lower battery life.

I basically narrowed it down to the Faxstf software that I had loaded up a few days before (btw, I have a GigaBook and am running 10.2.3). I removed the Apple Modem from the Print Center and that solved me modem problems for the most part. I realized that I also needed to remove the modem item that was slipped into my Login Items in System Preferences.

After that, everything is back to normal. Hope that helps.
