Do you actually have this build?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

iSub? Finder FTP? GeForce 4 Ti drivers revised? FireWire IP? Webcore stuff? Changes to support Java 1.4.1? I've had a few random, small oddities in 10.2.4 as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't something in the PB17" that's still needed in the OS. Maybe a workaround.

Sweetness. Dare I dream of built-in BT input device support pre-Panther? P800? T610?

I wonder if this update fixes the stupid modem disconnects for internal "software" modems (eMac, iMac...).

Why Apple introduced a problem like this in 10.2.4 is beyond me.

It must have been done to annoy you.

Or...

It was the result of an agreement with the cable modem/DSL companies...

Or...

It was a boring Friday...

Or...

They wanted to give us whiners something to complain about...

It's simply because they wanted to have something to do for the 10.2.5 update

Actually, Mark Rein (of Epic fame) mentioned something about sitting on UT2K3 until Apple released another OS update... *grin*

I'll place my bets on playing UT2K3 under 10.2.5

You do know that EVERY OS update brings new issues? Its unfortunately true. Even the 7.x.y, 8.x.y, and 9.x.y did. Its just that MOST weren't as bad as the date bug introduced in 10.2.4 In a few cases, the releases were SO bad, at Apple we told people NOT to install them. QUietly of course.

Could someone who has a copy try this? This is a bug which I was hoping would be fixed in 10.2.4, but it wasn't...

Type 'hdid' in the Terminal followed by a space and a URL to a DMG which is hosted on a virtual hosting web site. You can use one of mine to test, because my software is on virtual hosting:

hdid http://www.charlessoft.com/Pacifist.dmg

See if that works or if it returns a stupid "file not found" error like 10.2.0 through 10.2.4 do.

Wishes:

1) UDF 2.0 read support
2) Inherent support for Hitachi 32X CD-RW and Panasonic LF-D521U DVD-RAM/-RW/-R with Finder and iTunes. (OS X.2 already supports the Panasonic for DVD-RAM, and Toast supports both drives for everything.)
3) Support for DVD-R burned on Panasonic DMR series standalone DVD recorders
4) Better Radeon 9000 OpenGL drivers

I see mention of disk updates and OpenGL updates. Here's hoping that at least one of my concerns is addressed.

They'd better fix all the kernel panics with SMB. I had a kp today once again, and the damn jerk didn't make a panic.log.

Hmmm... I use SMB all the time to get files from my desktop (Windows XP Pro) and I haven't had an SMB related KP since something like X.1.3.

- BlitFloat32ToSInt16 now returns correct result when a device has more than 2 channels
- Sound Manager now uses kAudioDevicePropertyIOProcStreamUsage property to determine which channels to use.
- Sound Manager now sets the kAudioDevicePropertyIOProcStreamUsage property.
Evidence that we'll be seeing 5.1 before 10.3?

Don't worry, I didn't know either. A little research turned the answer up, though. VBL stands for vertical blank. It refers to the delay between when a CRT monitor finishes one drawing pass on the monitor and when it starts the next pass.
Syncing to VBL basically means that software can check to see whether the monitor is currently drawing the screen, and if so it can wait until the VBL period to change the image on the screen. If the software is not synced to VBL, it's possible that it will occasionally change the image halfway through the monitor's updating sweep, which would basically result in the bottom half of the image being drawn in a different state than the top half. You've probably seen this behavior before in certain full-screen games; I know I have.
Anyway, since the "torn" image is only onscreen for one refresh (at most one sixtieth of a second) you almost certainly won't notice only one. The problem is that if the frame rate is just slightly off from the monitor's refresh rate, the torn frames will come in chunks, and will be very visible -- sort of like how a propeller blade spinning up briefly appears to be spinning very slowly, because it's going around just slightly more or less than once in the time between your eyes refresh the image in your brain.
Obviously, if Mac OS X 10.2.4 doesn't support syncing to VBL correctly, anything where the frame rate is very close to, but not exactly, some even multiple or factor of your refresh rate will look hideously bad. Since the average refresh rate is probably about 75 Hz, and the average Quake 3 frame rate on a good day can easily get up to about 80, this is definitely something that should be fixed soon.

And now you know what VBL is. Aren't forums cool?
