hey guys,

i have a friend with a TiBook, and her slot-load's broken. she badly wants to upgrade to jaguar, but she can't install it using the cd's, because her DVD-ROM drive doesn't work.
is there anyway to intall X.2 using an external drive, or an HD? or does she just have to bite the bullet, and get the slot load fixed? she's got a VST ext fw CD-RW, but i think i tried to use that to boot, and it didn't work.

any suggestions would be much appreciated

Use another Mac. Boot up the other Mac from the Jaguar CD. Put the Powerbook into Firewire target mode (T while starting up), and plug it into the other Mac.

I'm not certain, but I think the chances are good that the install CD will recognize the external Firewire disk, and allow you to install onto it.

One other option: Install onto a different computer, and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the image onto the Powerbook.

thanks! that's a good idea! i didn't think of putting the TiBook in target mode, and installing onto that drive.

i'll have to try it on my external fw hd to make sure it works.
