I like antialiaed text in Mac OS X. But there is one thing I don't like and that is the colors of the anti aliased text. Try the following:

Hit Command - Shift - 4 and select some on screen text with the crosshairs to take a screen capture.

Open the resulting PDF and zoom in on some text in the image.

Notice how the anitialiased text is made of other colors, and not just different shades of the one color?

I WOULD prefer JUST shades of the one color. Why?

Because even with the antialias text settings in System Preferences set to "light" I can SEE the colors in the antialised text on my iMac 17" LCD at a NORMAL reading distance.

I want antialiased text to be shades of the one color - not diverse colors - is it possible to change this or is this a "QUARTZ" thing?

Anyone else feel the same?

You're talking about the effects of sub-pixle rendering of text for LCD displays. Set your font smoothing style back to normal and it will be just grey.

In System Preferences > General, you will find "Font smoothing style"

The options are:

1 Standard - Best for CRT

2 Light

3 Medium - Best for flat panel

4 Strong

Selecting any of these changes NOTHING.

After experimentation I have found:

In System Preferences > General

You have to choose:

1 Standard - Best for CRT

AND THEN LOG IN AGAIN.

This will give greys, or shades of the same font color.

Ok then to change the topic a little - Why does Sub pixel rendering create these color variations?
