i'll be getting my ibbok next week and it will be running OSX 10.2.4. i was wondering if i could ask what apps you guys consider ESSENTIAL for OSX .
i'm interested in apps like JPEG, (dont know if there is a version for OSX)
firewalls, anti-virus, utilities, music apps, cd label and jewelcase software, etc...

oh and yeah, i once read about an app that showed "flames" on the HD to show how much the CPU usage was going on. anyone know that app?

anyways, thanks for the help and i'll be around with alot more questions....

Mac OS X 10.2 and later has a built in simple Firewall, found in the Sharing preference pane.

I use Graphic Convertor to quicly open up JPEG files (I turned off the startup screen and it opens them almost as fast as jpegview (or whatever it was called) back in OS 9). You can also use Preview though, which is free and comes with OS X.

No need for anti-virus yet, no real viruses for Mac OS X.

iTunes 3 is all you need for an MP3 player, and comes with the installation.

As for utilites, Terminal will keep you busy for a while. (comes with OS X). Also get Launch Bar, it is a great time saving app. I also use Max Menus.

Also, I searched Version Tracker.com for 'label' and it came up with a good list:

http://www.versiontracker.com/mp/new...mp;x=0&y=0

Hope this helps.

Yeah me too, I was almost going to stop using it until I looked in the general preferences.

Looking at the open apps in my dock and I, i cant say there are any applications that are essential to improving the functionality of the operating system. It comes with almost everything you need.

As mentioned before, I would not wory about virus protection software. It will be a waste of time.

Web Browser - safari, IE (included)
Mail Browser - Mail - (included)
Simple text editor - TextEdit - (included)
The best CD/mp3 software ever - iTunes (included)
PDF/Graphics viewer - Preview (included)
X11 Server - X11 (get it from apples site)
FTP software - (Fetch, Anarchy, or other if the terminal is not your style)

Most people think ms office is a must have. You can easily get by with OpenOffice. It does exactly the same thing and faster. And the interface is almost identical. Can read and write MS docs also. Amazing software, and free. Only trouble is, its not good at opening complex word or excell files. Go to OpenOfice.org. You will need an X11 server for this beta version though.

I cannot live without wget. Allows you to download stuff right from the terminal fast.

To download all these uinix apps, go get FINK. This is my must have app of all time.

Well most of the stuff you'll need comes with OS X as the others have stated, but here's a few that I use that might interest you:

UpdateRadar - Used to check on Mac OS Software updates

WeatherPop/Meteorologist - Great small little weather apps

BBEdit - Must have for web designers or scripters

VirtualDesktop - Great for small 12" iBook or Powerbook screens

Synergy - Puts controls for iTunes in your menubar so you can use it when hidden or say on another virtual desktop

SetiMenu - I've been doing Seti for quite a while and this thing helps greatly instead of having to use one terminal just for Seti

Konfabulator - Interesting scripting/programming evironment allowing for small little things called widgets to run on your screen

There's tons more, I suggest either going to Versiontracker(www.versiontracker.com) or MacUpdate(www.macupdate.com) and read through the software. Some of the apps I stated are shareware, but some do have freeware alternatives if that's what you're looking for. Either way welcome to the Mac world and I wish you good luck while you're here.

If you want a GUI frontend to the firewall, try Brickhouse.

I guess this belongs in the software forum, at first.

And for the essential apps, apart from the tools Apple supplied with the system UI find Dragthing, Proteus (chat client) and MaxMenus (or something linke it) rather useful/essential.

But that also depend on your usage of the machine.

No offense, but how come you say "i'm interested in apps like JPEG, (dont know if there is a version for OSX)" and have more posts on these forums than I do??

I'm sure that makes me sound like a wanker but welcome to OS X anyway. A lot of the suggestions so far have been apps which change the way you use OS X. Personally, I would get comfortable with the interface first and decide whether you like it going changing things....
