How to delete encrypted disk image?

I created an encrypted disk image via Disk Copy. I would like to permanently delete it so that it no longer takes up dedicated drive space.

Do I just drag the .dmg file into the trash and empty the trash? I'm afraid to do this - I don't want to trash the .dmg file only to find out that the volume is still present on my drive with no way to get at it.

Do I need to mount the disk (i.e. enter the password) before deleting it?

I assume that I should remove all files from the disk image before deleting it.

Thanks in advance.

Just delete it (the dmg), it is the same as any other disk image. It's just another file, it won't leave mysterious volumes lying around.

Thanks, but what do you mean by "it would leave mysterious volumes lying around"? That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Am I misreading you?

Thanks again.

He meant to say "wouldn't leave mysterious volumes lying around".

Really, a .dmg is just a file. If it's not mounted, your Mac doesn't know it from an mp3 of your dog barking.
