I know fink stores files in /sw

but where does it install stuff to?

Does it install everything in /sw?

Hence, if I deleted /sw (not like I'm going to) will I break everything I installed?
I always use protection when fscking my Mac... Do you?

/sw/bin/

Yes indeed.

I think you just answered your own question.
Does it install everything in /sw?
Yes, with one notable exception: XFree86 is places files in /usr/X11R6, /etc/X11 and /Applications/XDarwin.app.

The fink binary is actually located at /sw/bin/fink

If you ever want to know where a command line program is, run the where command:

[Alan-Orths-Computer:~] aorth% where fink
/sw/bin/fink

If you have two versions of something installed, the output will look like this (in which the topmost entry is the one your computer looks for first):

[Alan-Orths-Computer:~] aorth% where chmod
/sw/bin/chmod
/bin/chmod

-or-, to see which install your computer is running first, use the which command:

[Alan-Orths-Computer:~] aorth% which chmod
/sw/bin/chmod

Hope this helps not only in this problem, but in the future too !

Well, yes, except that running these commands (or trying to run the fink command) only results in "fink: command not found" even though it is in /sw/bin/, right where you said it would be. My computer doesn't seem to know where Fink is located, which is why I needed to know where it was. Other commands in the /sw/bin directory do work.

Thanks.
