Alright, I can reproduce this enormous problem, tell me if any of you can. I'm just going to tell you exactly what I do to cause this problem.
I had a zip file of Wagner's "Die Walküre". I had to unzip it with stuffit's unzipper because the command line "unzip" (which handles long file names correctly) doesn't handle oomlauts correctly (the two dots of the u in walkure). So, when I do it with stuffit, I get a bunch of files named like this:
Solti - Die Walk?re - Act 1 No.1
Solti - Die Walk?re - Act 1 No.2
Solti - Die Walk?re - Act 1 No.3
etc.
Those ?'s are supposed to be what happens when you hit option-8. They are instead of ü's. Now, I went through adding ".mp3" to all of the files so that iTunes could import them (it won't import files that the finder doesn't believe are MP3s). If I hit enter to edit the file's name, and then zero on the numpad, all windows stop recognizing the mouse. I can apple-tab between programs, but things like apple-shift-q to log out don't work. I have to apple tab to terminal (which I keep running), apple-n for a new window, and kill the window manager which dumps be back out to the log in screen.
Any ideas?
Can you guys reproduce this?

Okay, here's an update:
I've realized that if I hit enter, and then zero quickly, at any time, in any program, it kills everything. Usually a window gets "stuck" to the mouse. I mean that if I hit option, or apple, it will redraw the screen, and a window follows my mouse as I move it. Wow, this is so strange. What should I do? Reformat?

I wouldn't. It sounds like 'sticky keys', part of Universal Access. I'm not using Jaguar right now, and I don't remember the exact location of everything, but look under System Preferences for the Universal Access pane, or in the Keyboard pane for 'Full Keyboard Access'. Anything that mentions using the numeric keypad to move the mouse cursor, turn it off.

You were mighty right. It was strange though. It got to the point where all I had to do was hit 0, and I wouldn't be able to type anything in any window. Or drag any window. Does that seem right? Well, either way I turned off all that stuff, and now my computer is happy again.
Thanks very much!

So much for the enormous bug .
BTW, why didn't you just unzip the mp3 files, rename them in the finder, then import into iTunes? Replacing a simple umlaut should be easy enough.
BTW, the Solti series are still my favorite of The Ring. The met recordings are good but the singers aren't as good (except for Hagen - Matti Salminen rules!)

Hey!
I still think there was something fishy going on. It got to the point where all I had to do was hit "0" on the numpad, and I wouldn't be able to type anything, or use the mouse to do anything, or make any new windows.
Oh, and I couldn't rename the files, because I didn't know what they were called. The part that didn't get cut off was just Solti - Walkyrie - Act 01 - and that's it (basically). I couldn't tell the files apart....
