is it just one particular folder which does this, or is it just a random occurrence?

A friend had this happen (unfortunately it was his desktop folder :-) and it turned out to be a problem with the cached icon for a pdf file. I think there is a program which will clear the cache files, a versiontracker search should turn up something. Anyway, not sure if this will work or not, but hope it helps,

I've seen this happen too. Can't work out if it is one particular file that causes it. Not always repeatable.

i have some folders filled with alot of imovie dv files and that kills finder every time, i booted into os9 and moved them into smaller folders which seemed to solve the problem. Its the only really silly bug ive encountered in osx. Its strange because im sure ive been in folders with more than 80 files before

You can try deleting your caches via Jaguar Cache Cleaner.
