I finally got my adsl connection (with eithernet modem) yesterday and got it installed and up and running without problems. Now I realise that although it seemed all ok I cannot get a connection via the software update panel in system prefs to download any updates with the adsl connection, only using my old built in 56k modem (I have a iMac 400dvse). It goes so far but I don't get to see the list of updates to download.

I have the same problem with this forum. I can read messages here but I can't post a reply, nothing happens for a while and then I get a message that the site or server is not availiable.

Finally I can't send an e mail with an attachment to my work. In mail I just get a message in mail saying I need to check my settings.

Anyone any ideas? my service provider is not being very helpful as they don't support OSX only OS8/9.

My modem by the way is a IPMDATACOM Speedweb

I was wondering if it could be some sort of incompatability with the ethernet modem that they gave me and OSX. With the installation for os9 that they sent me there was software to install (enternet I think) but I had always understood that nothing was needed with OSX and since I don't have classic or os9 I couldn't install it anyway.
It seems so strange that certain connections work fine but others are giving me problems.

The mac should work fine, using PPPoE network settings. Check that your firewall is off. Also check the network cable between the mac and the DSL modem. It sounds strange, but I've seen wierd troubles like this go away when I used a good quality cable.
