Ok,
I have a Private network with 4 computers.
Each computer has an ip address 192.168.1.xx and all the same gateway.
I named a host in the netinfomanager for computer a HOSTNAME = titanium
In the terminal of computer b i try to ping titanium but it does not see it. if I ping titanium.local I get a response but just titanium i get nothing.... what else do I need to do???
I 've allready changed HOSTNAME = -AUTOMATIC- to HOSTNAME= titanium in hostconfig and added 192.168.1.xx in etc/hosts ... same in netinfomanager... added machines --> titanium and gave it the same IP ...BTW IP's are static
Thanks!!

Have you added them to your hosts file (in /etc/)?

if you add this line:
192.168.1.x titanium
to /etc/hosts (where x, obviously, is replaced by the last digit of titanium's IP address) on the machine you are trying to send the ping from, it will work, unless ICMP is being blocked on your network somewhere.
I don't know much about how netinfo works, but if you set up /etc/hosts properly on the client side, the setup on the server side won't matter.

... if all the machines are Mac OS X systems, this will have absolutely zero effect.
By default, Mac OS X does not refer to /etc/hosts during normal operation - only when booted in single-user mode.
The only appropriate place to add static host entries in each machine's NetInfo database, using NetInfo Manager.

Interesting. I had no idea. I don't know much about netinfo at all. I come from the UNIX side of the world. Haven't had any need to set up static hosts on my home machine, though.

It claims it doesn't, but it's lying. /etc/hosts does work in normal operation, it just shouldn't.

try add open System Prefs -> Network, and add "local" in Search Domains, do this on all machines.
hope it works.
