I was just wondering if any one could tell me of the difference between resarting your mac compaired to shuting down and starting up again. I ask this as it has to do with the performance of my speedtouch USB modem ( yeah - I know its a sh*ty modem - funds dont quite allow for a separate modem+router yet)
The problem is that I can NEVER get connected when I startup my iMac. Often even getting messages that the modem does not exist. Then I will restart and connect as fast as I can and it all works fine.
Shutting down and starting up never allows me to connect, but restarting the mac once it is already on gets the modem working.
SO...whats the diff??
I Presumed that a restart was exactly the same as a start, just without actually having to press the power button.
Anyone care to enlighten me??

One think I can think of, but do not know if true, is that maybe the USB port is being powered all the way during the restart, and if you shutdown you stop sending power to the USB port (of course).
