My 15" PowerBook should be here next week and I want to get rid of OS 9. I have no use for it since this is my first Apple and I like OS X quite a bit better.

My friend told me to just do a complete reinstall with just X when I get my PB, but I was wondering if there was a way to just delete the 9 portion without getting rid of anything else. Thanks for your help.

a couple of thoughts....if you want to remove it, I recommend the clean install route.

I have installed four times previously with a partition for OS9
(but blank at first), only to add 9 eventually. I find the ability to troubleshoot OSX through 9 is nice, also I use a lot of my old utilities that only work in 9.

My advise is to leave 9 as the space is relatively small and the OS has its uses even to a full time OSX user.

Just leave it there. OS 9 without any additional apps takes only 300 megs. It doesn't do any harm and if you don't run the Classic startup it won't do anything.

If you want to delete it - remove the following folders from the main directory:

System Folder (not System)
Applications (MacOS 9)
Documents

But really why mess with it? - there maybe some OS 9 app that you want to play with that you can't.

Bottom line - having OS 9 present doesn't do anything except take a small amount of space.

Just make sure that once you get the mac that Classic doesn't start automatically on boot up or login.

It's not necessary to do a complete reinstall of the OS just to get rid of OS 9. But you can't drag/drop the OS 9 system folder into the Trash.

Once you get your PB just fire up terminal and go to the root of the HD by typing "cd /[enter]" Without the quotes of course.

Next type the following the commands:
ls -al (to get a listing of the files)
sudo rm -R "system folder" [enter]

This will delete the OS 9 system folder from your HD. You might also delete the folder named "Applications (OS 9)"

I think eventually we'll all lose OS 9, but unless you know your way round Terminal commands, booting into 9 remains a quick and easy way of fixing certain X issues - and circumventing 'permissions' ...

I'd keep a bootable but minimal OS 9 folder. After all, it's a feature of OS X than 'Classic' integrates and works so well...

I have been OS 9 free for over a year, since 10.1 came out and I have never missed it. Not once have I ever come across a situation where I said to myself "gee, I sure wish I still had OS 9 around to boot into to fix something." That simply hasn't happened.

The original poster wanted to know how he could easily delete OS 9 from his new Powerbook. Instead of trying to convince him he needs OS 9 around why not just tell him what he wants to know?

When I got my 12 inch Powerbook, I chucked the "Applications (Mac OS 9)" and "Documents" folder away (these are old OS 9 relics which don't need to be around).

Then I renamed "System Folder" to "Classic" and the deed was done.
It's only about 200MB in size, and you can strip that down too by chucking any extension you know you'll never use (Control Strip Extension anyone? - not on a computer that can't even boot 9!).

One thing that really confused me when going through the bundled software on my 12 inch Powerbook was the presence of the OS 9 application "Drive Setup" (yes, by default) as it cannot run in Classic and my computer cannot boot 9????
