Hi. I would like to use my machine (running os x 10.2.4) as my outgoing mail server... is this possible? Is it simple to just turn on?

thanks!

It's not simple to just turn on sendmail, but once you get it going it just runs. The O'Reilly web site has a great tutorial on configuring sendmail, in Jaquar, to be an SMTP server http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/ma.../sendmail.html.

depending on what you need it to do, it is fantastically easy to turn on SendMail to function as an outgoing SMTP server.

1. change /etc/hostconfig MAILSERVER to -YES-

2. add "localhost" to /etc/mail/local-host-names

3. sudo chmod g-w /

4. reboot or type "/System/Library/StartupItems/Sendmail/Sendmail start". you should see two sendmail processes running.

5. set your SMTP server in your mail program to be "localhost".

As it states in the O'reilly article, that is not an optimal solution. If you do that, only root can write to the root directory of the disk.

This is a great tutorial for getting your system set up as a mail server and being able to use Apple Mail. Author says he tested it on the default 10.2.4 and it works. Worked for me.
