OK, my iMac is behaving very odd.
It seems like I'm for some reason loosing HD space. Not fast, but rather slow. Yesterday it told me I had 800MB free but 10 minutes ago I had 54MB free. I checked my server and I hadn't got any new files. At the same time it seems like my preferances are disappearing. I noticed that moz had lost all bookmarks and passwords(cookies?). I restarted and then I was back to the 2.8GB I expected to have of free HD space. Also the prefs for Finder seemed a little mixed up, for example was the HD image on the desktop, I had removed it from there. When I opened finder in the dock it showed the computer and not home like I had it before.
Anyone got a clue of what is happening?
I'm running X.2.4.
Thanx

could be swap files (for virtual memory) taking up the space, or some of it anyway.
try booting from your 10.2 cd and running disk utility (it's in the apple menu) fix the disk and permissions. I've had the prefs go flaky for some apps from time to time.

Swap files (pageouts from virtual memory) are 76 mb each, and they can stack up after a while, if you're running a ton of apps at once, or don't have a lot of RAM. If you want to see how many swap files you have, in the Go>Go to folder... window, type /private/var/vm
If you've got more than 3 or 4, you might consider adding more RAM to your machine, or figure out if you're running a program with a memory leak. The only way to clear them out entirely is to restart.

Sucks dosn't it?
You need to free up some HD space, just you iTunes starts quiting out on you and losing it library. Its no fun.

Its a nasty little bug and has happened to me several times so far under 10.2. And usually was wiped out my mail prefs, meaning I have to resetup all my accounts. And reorganise all the icons on my desktop which suddenly become humongeous. The Solution is to make sure you always have plenty of space around, getting down below 100MB is into danger territory. However no harm seems to be done in terms of actually deleting files.

Thanks guys.
I was wondering how do I find out if there is an app that is causing the memory leak?
I have 384MB RAM and just a couple of apps open always.
Thanks again

Don't worry about it.
It seems like it is Crushftp that is causing this.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if VSIZE in the top command is 1.15G isn't it sure it is crushftp that is causing this?
If anyone knows of another ftp server app I would be glad if you told me about it.
Thanks

Ugh, and then all your running applications start tweaking out. Then, once you've restarted to kill the overzealous swap files, you realize that most of your applications' preferences have been reset. Grr.

Yep, 'protected memory' isn't so effective when you've got applications forcing the OS to crap VM files all over. I've had this problem with Konfabulator in the past, and the bugs have probably been squashed by now, but I have since ceased using it.
