I am trying to set up a network between two macs that I have at home, a G3 ibook 700, and a G4 eMac 700. I bought the crossover cable and both computers are running os x.2.4, but when I try to connect, it says that either the wrong username or password was entered, or that login is disabled. I've checked the passwords on the individual computers and they are correct. If anyone knows how I could fix this I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Did you turn on File Sharing?

Actually, you don't need a crossover cable. Modern Macs are smart enough to figure this out.
So ya, check that sharing is on and that sharing is allowed if the firewall is enabled.

I checked and the sharing option is on. It still tells me there is a login error.

The sharing option has to be on on the computer you are trying to connect to, not the one you are connecting from. Just thought I'd point that out, just in case that wasn't obvious.

Look at the ip address, on one computer, and see if you can ping it from your computer. You can do this in the terminal by typing:

>ping 192.168.1.101

(that might be the ip address of the computer you're connecting to, you can check that in the network system preference)

Pinging is the first thing I do, just to make sure there is a connection between the computers at all. Could be that your cable is messed up, or, however unlikely, one or both or your ethernet ports are messed up.
