Hmph. I've only been using OS X (jag) regularly for a couple months so maybe these items are available but I can't figure out where/how.

Or maybe there's a utility? let me know

--In a Finder window in column view, I double-click on a folder, nothing happens. If the folder is up a level, I do see its contents, but that's what would happen if I just clicked it once. When I double-click, I want the folder to open in a new window. Possible?

-- Related to above... In a Finder window in any view, why isn't "open in a new window" available when I right-click on a folder. Don't you think it should be? I keep looking for it LOL. Maybe I saw it once there in a dream. Even if "double clicking a folder opens it in a new window" is a Preferences setting (which I suspect), if you have that Pref off, it should still be available in a context menu.

--In a Finder window in column view, I want to sort one of the columns by something other than alpha. (e.g. date modified). The only way I can do this is using old-style List view. But in many instances I want to stay in column view. Possible? This is something I really really want.

--Any way to "hammer" a particular Finder window into the Dock? I can minimize them there, but if I later open them and then mistakenly hit the close box instead of minimize, it's no longer available in the Dock. I want them to stay there permanently (a "keep in Dock" option).

--You know how "New Folder" is a contextual menu item in a Finder window. I love that. But why does that item go away when I need it most... in a Finder column view, right-most column, showing the contents of a folder, and the contents are so voluminous that it takes up the entire column. (So I need to create a new folder to organize some of them.) Wherever I click in that list of contents I get file or folder-specific options, and New Folder isn't there.

those are the ones that come to mind...

thx

Hold down the command key while double clicking the folder. This will open the folder in a new window (in all 3 views).
Holding down the option key will open the folder in a new window and close the current window.

Seting the finder preferences to "always open folder in new window" will open a double clicked folder in a new window and single clicking a folder will open it in a new column.
That only works in column view.

That's the reason i have the "new folder" short cut in the finder toolbar. That way i can create a new folder in a really crowded column.

In column view I'd personally like an option that right justifies the columns with the right most column in view whenever you click on a folder. That way you aren't constantly scrolling to find where you are.

check out "transparentdock", try versiontracker.com.

it's an excellent app, offers some great features for the dock, including the ability to lock the dock, so you can't remove apps or folders...

1. How about smart folders (like smart playlists in iTunes) that update when certain parameters of a file are changed. I know we have recent apps and docs in the Apple menu, but there should be user-adjustable parameters in addition to allowing the user to browse the files in the Finder.

2. Ability to copy view preferences to ALL folders or all sub-folders of a specific folder. For instance, I have an Icons folder and I prefer to view only those folders in icon view at 128x128 to see all the exquisite detail. Currently, I have manually change every folder.

3. Meta-data, meta-data, meta-data. Although not entirely the Finder's fault (as it is just a file browser), features do have to be added to the Finder in order to take advantage of such file system enhancements. (i.e. labels). Labels could be redone as badges - adding custom badges to documents, folders, etc. Adding support for meta-data will also help number 1.

4. Instant folder updates. Currently, the finder does not visible update right away after a file is changed, saved or deleted (especially if someone is connected via AFP and making such changes). These should all appear instantaneous to the user.

Those are my gripes for the moment.

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

How about placing the folder in the dock instead of just the window? (ie drag the folder from it's parent's window to the dock). The folder stays in the Dock when you close it's window.
