Any suggestions for a situation where Mail unexpectedly quits even before it comes up on the screen? In other words, I can't access Mail period.

Do I reinstall the system just to reinstall Mail and if doing so, can I overwrite my old mail files thus losing them. I don't want to do that.

it's probably your preferences that are the problem - not the application itself. Move those out of the preferences folder, and see if it wont start up for you...
