Just curious here if people think there is any truth to this thought. Considering the threats apple had levied against the trade show company which was producing the Macworlds, moving WWDC right up against macworld appears to be intended to steal Macworld's thunder. Considering that Macworld is not scheduled to have a steve keynote either, while WWDC is scheduled to be the unveling of Panther, can anyone thing of a good reason for going to MWNY anymore?

I don't think such a conspiricy exists.

Rather, I think Apple wants to show Panther but:

A) Needed more time
B) Found those dates to be available

Booking the Moscone Convention Center is not like getting a room at the Holiday Inn you know - those convention centers are booked years in advance. Apple was probably lucky to find an open date around the timeframe they wanted.

With all that said, it would not surprise me to see a larger WWDC that happens every year in SF in May or June. And it also would not surprise me to see the East Coast MW slowly dry up and eventually be cancelled, leaving us with just the SF Macworld.

I think, over the years, Apple has come to realize that the MacWorld Conferences have obligated them to release software/hardware while still in stages of development. They have been criticized for not "working out the bugs" before release... By not committing to events with fixed dates, Apple has the flexibility to announce new software/harware at their own pace.
