2 possiblities
1) You're using a user who isn't an administrator
2) You're dragging Synergy into the wrong library. There are 3 libraries in OSX
1) HD/System/Library (Don't touch this)
2) HD/Library this library is used for global changes that you want all users to have access to (ie drivers, fonts, haxies...etc)
3) ~/Library this is your user library. If you are the only user, use this library only (it also makes backing up much easier) (~ = your home)
To install synergy. Go to ~/Library. Place synergy in ~/Library/PreferencePanes folder. If the folder doesn't exist create it. Launch system preferences and have fun.

I've used synergy, like it, but found something better (i think) and best of all, free.
It's called PTHitunesNotifier
It has TONS of options including keystrokes for volume and track controls, popup semi-transparent windows with song info, many different buttons to choose from for the menu bar and it works great.

do you have a screen shot of the controls in the menu bar? what other functionality does it have? right now i've had to put an synergy alias in the dock because everytime i shutdown my ibook and restart the menu bar controls disappear and i have to double click the alias in the dock for them to reappear. (other than that it runs fine) maybe it's because i havent paid the $5.00 for it yet?

Both programs are good. I paid for both of them (PTHitunes is donationware and Synergy is shareware). I still prefer Synergy for a few reasons.
1) It's a preference pane
2) The floating window looks nicer and you can click through it (ie if it's covering up your scroll arrows you don't have to move the window or the floating window to scroll)
3) The feedback floating windows that appear after pressing a button or command are awesome (for those who don't know, they look like the windows that appear when you hit eject or change the volume)
4) Future release of Synergy is supposed to incorporate album covers (much like Playalong)
All that said and done they're both very cool. I'd also check out PTHvolume, PTH CPUMonitor, PTHclock which all rule.
