i've been in osx for three weeks now, np.
just now...
opened a couple of apps, playing a song in itunes,
my powerbook screen blinked, then logged out (returning me to the login screen).

what could cause this?

(and what, if anything, should i do about it??)

thanx!

Glad to see it's not just me. I've had 3 in the last 2 months.

Never saw it in a year and a half of X on my Pismo. Only started with my new 12" PB.

Each time has been shortly after waking up the computer. Hit work, wake it up, plug in power ethernet and USB mouse. a little later....boom. Login screen

loginwindow probably died.

That's the parent process of everything you're running. If that dies, almost* all other processes you're running from the console will die as well.

* There are, of course, exceptions to this, but these are beyond the scope of this post.

USB is hot-pluggable, so this is supposed to work fine.

Hi,

I'm on a pismo and i've had it logout unexpectedly once on me. It's been fine since then, I guess it must have been the loginwondow process as someone mentioned earlier.

both are hot-pluggable, you just need to unmount the corresponding media before you unplug the cable.
that's it

This was one of the symptoms of the bad RAM piece in my B/W G3.

...Somewhat related.

I don't think this is unique to OSX. I'm running Red Hat 7.2 on some PC's, and there is a particular open-source Batch Scheduler I use that regularly causes unexpected logouts.

I had this problem as well. It turned out to be bad RAM. After removing it everything was fine.
