Is there a way to get any of these utilities (e.g. Server Status) to work with other non Mac OS X Unix servers? In other words, I'd like to run Server Status on my Mac OS X machine to monitor my Linux server.

I know this is a long shot, but these utilities are sweet! If all it takes is changing some values in an XML file or something, this would be fantastic.

Anybody?

I used Pacifist to install some stuff from the Server Essentials package, and it hosed my entire system. I had to reinstall OSX to get things working again. Also, the apps won't launch on a non-OSXS system, but I think there's a way to make OSX identify as OSXS. Not sure though.

Whoa, wait a minute...if you are wanting Server Status and Server Settings/WorkGroup Manager and whatnot to launch in OS X client, not a problem...simply drag them over (no installation necessary), I use them daily.

Now if you are wanting those apps to track a server that is non-OS X Server, it won't be able to do that.

Make sense?

Maybe this was because of some other problems on my end, but when I tried that, the apps appeared in the dock, bounced once and quit themselves instantly.

Interesting. I literally just dragged them over...are you sure you didn't miss something when extracting from the Server Services package? Try my way, should work.

If I have to install OS X server, I can live with that. I think the bigger challenge will be getting the tools working with my Linux server.

Does anybody wish to contend with Gorickey's claim that it's not possible?

Well it's not possible to get the OS X server tools running. You'd be able to reverse engineer the protocols and code your own replacement, but you can't run OS X binaries on Linux.

there would be no OS X binaries necessary to be run under Linux.
